Trump is Van der Lubbe in Capitol Riot Reichstag Redux

The Internet is littered with stories, videos and social media comments that attempt to equate the recent riot at the Capitol with …. wait for it…Nazi Germany. It’s the go-to comparison that rings well with the masses on the Left that are easily manipulated. For those who oppose Trump, screaming that Trump is literally Hitler is a slam dunk.

The Hitler comparison is intellectually lazy, factually without merit, and demonstrates how limited Americans are when it comes to understanding history. Trump, for all of his faults, is more of a blowhard who has a lifetime of throwing tantrums to get his way. His greatest desire may have been to used his presidency as a means to become an authoritarian leader, but he has never had the capacity or has failed in pulling it off.

The most recent example of a failed connection between Trump and the Nazi dictator was the attempt to use the actions of Nazi Germany during and after the 1933 Reichstag fire as some sort of precedent for the so-called insurrection of the Capitol.

The glaring reason why this fails is because no one making the Recihstag fire comparison has properly equated the roles of those involved with players in today’s environment.

German Reichstag ablaze

If you buy into the story widely reported and promoted by the Nazis, a Dutch Communist by the name of Marinus van der Lubbe set the fire on behalf of Communists who wanted to overthrow the German government.

Van der Lubbe was reported to be mentally challenged and it was an easy conviction for the Nazi dominated court. Van der Lubbe was one of five people tried for the arson and attempting to overthrow the government. He was also the only convicted and was beheaded.

Some, including the Russian government, argued that the Nazis set the fire in order to give Hitler his crisis requiring an authoritarianism response.

Hitler did just that. He convinced then German President Paul von Hindenburg to issue an emergency decree that pretty much gave Hitler carte blanche to go after anyone who wasn’t a Nazi. This consolidation of power and authority to weed out those who did not adhere to the Nazi rule, led to the horror the world was subjected to over the next dozen years.

Knowing what happened in 1933 Berlin and seeing the result of what happened in 2021 Washington, wouldn’t it be a more accurate statement to say that President Trump is actually the van der Lubbe in this story?

Trump supporters that occupy the far Right and the entire GOP have suffered a massive black eye in this mess and in no way come out of it in a position of power. The short attention span of most Americans will probably mean they will take the House back in 2022, but for now, they are on the outside looking in.

The Democrats, big tech and the media are all benefiting from their rhetoric that has further divided the country. They have successfully silenced much of the opposition, crippled politicians who have had any association with Trump, and have successfully perpetuated this idea that it was a coup attempt.

So for those who reach back to Hitler’s Germany for every outrage, the Democrat party, big tech and media, are ‘literally Hitler,’ and stumbling bumbling Trump is the half-wit Van der Lubbe.
